Surrey Police has an annual budget of more than £200m and a workforce of over 4,000 people. It is responsible for protecting more than 1.1 million Surrey people from all kinds of threats and challenges, from low level antisocial behaviour to the most serious kinds of violent and organised crime. Overseeing Surrey Police is clearly a complex job and the 17 Members of the Authority must actively scrutinise all aspects of how the force works, such as the way crime is dealt with and prevented, how the police engage with the public, how audits are carried out and so on.
To make sure that Members can provide ongoing specialist scrutiny on the work of Surrey Police, Panels and Committees have been established to cover the core areas of policing, including performance, community engagement, finance, HR, complaints and customer service. At these meetings, Members of the Authority have the opportunity to query senior officers and staff of Surrey Police face-to-face about their areas of work.
These Panels have no decision making powers of their own. Their role is to examine the issues and provide detailed reports and recommendations for the consideration of the full Authority during their public meetings, where all key decisions are made and approved.
