2008/09 Consultation Results

Last year, we conducted a wide-ranging survey of Surrey people and our key partner organisations to determine their views on policing in the county. On this page you can read detailed reports and analysis of our findings, along with a run-down on the actions arising from them.

Understanding the Consultation Process

We go to great lengths to get the views of as many Surrey people as we can in our consultations, and this year saw us increase our response rate by around 40%.

We distributed our questionnaire to 10,000 randomly selected Surrey households in December 2008, and sent the same questions to hundreds of our partner organisations, including local schools, emergency services, libraries, local authorities, Members of Parliament and businesses. Above is the document outlining the results of the consultation after the data had been collated and analysed by SPA officers.

This is the exact document put to the Members of the Police Authority to show the findings of the consultation. Alongside the provisional police budget and the professional guidance of the Chief Constable on the policing risks facing the county, this consultation data represented one of the key inputs into the process of developing the Policing Plan and targets that Surrey Police has to work towards in the year 2009/10.

You can view the Local Policing Plan by clicking the image above.

This plan is heavily influenced by the results of our consultation work. Notable changes to this year's plan following our surveys include a strengthening of Surrey Police's approach to serious acquisitive crime, and the introduction of antisocial driving as a priority area for action.

You can read more about how Surrey Police is now acting on these priorities by scrolling down the page.

Taking Action on Your Priorities

We are keen to demonstrate how what you tell us in our consultations results in real action in your communities.

A new area of action for 2009/10 is tackling antisocial driving, which our survey showed was an emerging concern for local people. As a result of this finding, Surrey Police is now actively pursuing those who use the county's roads in an antisocial, inconsiderate or dangerous manner through Operation Quake II, which is underway right across Surrey.

You can see the latest news on Operation Quake and the difference it is making by visiting the Surrey Police website here.

We are also working in partnership with Surrey County Council, who have an equally important role to play in tackling antisocial driving. New Council Leader Cllr Dr Andrew Povey has recently announced a joint £1m project between the Council and the Police to help cut speeding and discourage aggressive and antisocial driving throughout Surrey. You can read more about this here.

We also remain committed to our existing priorities, which local people have continued to strongly support. These include being ready to respond to major emergencies such as a terrorist incident, continuing to focus on the wishes of the community first, strengthening work to prevent burglary and tackling the organised crime groups coming into Surrey to commit serious offences
